Holding it is comfortable but the lack of a rubber cover makes the grip a bit slippery. On the other hand, the camera is not so pocketable, a smaller size would be more ideal. Despite this, the camera is compact and easy to carry.

The AA batteries makes it very convenient; however, it produces roughly 245 shots while running on a fresh pair of batteries, unlike other cameras of the same range that produces more than 300 shots on a single battery pair. Its performance in terms of speed is more than average and easily usable. Its buttons and switches are well placed and solid. Despite being a plastic the camera doesn’t look low-priced.

The vital buttons and control are in the right places, so operating this camera with one hand is possible and easy. The flash feature enables taking pictures in dull or dark places. Close to the flash is the optical view finder. The optical view finder enhances focusing in low light places. It displays a blinking light when the self time functionality is on. This Canon Powershot A590IS camera also features a microphone on the upper left part.

Additionally, since Canon is a Microsoft partner, this camera is compatible with a variety of operating systems, including the recently launched Window Vista. Other compatible operating systems include, Windows XP and Mac OS X. It’s packed with a 32 Mb memory card.
